Balancing a 9-5 and being a boss on the side can be tough, but the real ones prevail.
I’d like to introduce you to twenty-one-year-old Janaya Burke-Smith.
Janaya is the founder of the Meet the Creators, a web series that gives artists a platform to showcase their work. In November of 2018 Janaya started brainstorming ideas for the show. She went all in December of 2018 with Meet the Creators and a creative masterpiece was born. The show first premiered in January of 2019. Janaya made it known that once she has her mind on something, she wastes no time. Recently, we were able to chat with Janaya and learned more about her journey.
Where do you and your team members reside?
I am from the city of Boston, Massachusetts. Most of the team resides in Boston as well, but there are some team members that are working in different states.
What inspired “Meet The Creators” (MTC)?
There was a time in my life when I was stuck between getting a job, or hustling and doing art full time. I tried doing art full time and I struggled so much. From that point on, I started to wonder why it was so challenging to be a full-time artist, but it was so easy to be a full-time Walmart employee. Meet the Creators was inspired by all of the struggles that I went through when trying to be a full-time artist. I created this web show in order to give all types of artists a platform to showcase their work. The goal behind it is to not only give artists exposure but to inspire artists to keep pushing no matter what obstacles they may face on their journey.
Season 3 recently dropped. What can we expect for season 4?
For season 4, you can expect to meet more amazing artists in the city of Boston. Be prepared for another fun challenge next season as well!
As a young black millennial, what advice would you give to aspiring creators?
Some advice that I have for aspiring creators is don’t be lazy. A couple of years back, I was all talk. I would write down/talk about my dreams and what I wanted to accomplish but, I would never take action. Don’t be the old me. Take action and make your goals and dreams come true! Stay consistent. Do whatever it takes for you to get to your next goal. Also, do not let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do. As a creator, you are your own boss. If you want to draw, paint, sing, direct videos, model, and do photography, DO IT. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you truly want to do.
How do you manage both Meet The Creators and your 9-5? Any self-care rituals?
Managing MTC and working a 9-5 does get challenging but I use 2 things as my sources of motivation. One of them is the people that doubt me, and the other is my long term goals. One important self care ritual that I have is writing. Writing helps me cope with managing MTC and a 9-5 because when I write, I write down my long term goals. Everyday, I read them aloud and affirm myself of those goals. This helps me get by. Another ritual that I have would be to take a break sometimes. When you are consistently working, it is easy for you to get tired which makes it even more easy for you to want to give up. Give yourself a break at least once a week. Carve out some time from your schedule to take care of yourself, meet up with friends, and have some fun. When it is time to get back to work, you’ll feel amazing.
