When I was in college, I had the opportunity to go on a study abroad trip to Ghana to learn more about the textiles and culture. I was fortunate to have traveled a good bit growing up but my time in Ghana was much different. The people, the music, the food, the history all had a lasting impact on my life. When I returned home from my trip my mom met me with a million questions and all I could say was, “I was more aware”. More aware of the world we live in, the stories of people around the world and it was up to me to find my place in it. Sitting down and talking to the guys of Black & Abroad brought back these memories and allowed me to question the importance of black people traveling.

Black and Abroad is a platform focused on blacks exploring through travel, embracing different cultures and and empowering the world we live in. Through their blog and work in travel consulting they have made it their mission to inspire the black community to travel and challenge marketing agencies to show black representation traveling in the media.

During our conversation, we talk about:

  • The lack of diversity and inclusion in travel
  • When the African American community is authentically marketed to research shows they are more apt to spend more money.
