The candidates that get hired are the ones that enter the job interview calm, cool and collected. They realize their worth and know they need to be interviewing the company just as much as the company is interviewing them.

WHO TO ASK

Below are some general questions that you can use to ask your interviewer regardless of the industry or the interviewer’s professional background.

WHAT TO ASK

  1. What are some big projects you’re working on now or that you’ve finished up in the last few months?
  2. What do you enjoy the least? Or, is there something that surprised you about the project when you first started?
  3. Do you think there’s a personality type that’s not well-suited for this kind of position/team?
  4. What are some of the biggest challenges you face day-to-day?
  5. What about the biggest rewards?
  6. What do you wish you’d known when you were starting out in this position?
  7. Where do you see yourself and the company in 5 or 10 years?

WHEN TO ASK

Try to treat the interview like a conversation. You don’t need to ask these questions at specific times.  Instead, keep them in your back pocket, when the time is right insert them as you would during any normal conversation.

WHY TO ASK

These questions are important and relevant for several reasons. Asking these questions can:

  1. Help you stand out from other candidates
  2. Help you gauge how well the company may fit your daily work expectations.
  3. Give you an idea of the team dynamics.
  4. Show you whether or not the interviewer seemed prepared and open to talking to someone he/she manages

Use these questions to stand out as a high-value candidate, and make sure you add a few additional personal questions relevant to the person by doing thorough research on their work in advance as well.
